the futility
gets me every time
so she told meduring one carefree coffeehouse stroll
i wonder
as she skips away and
crosses the shifting street
her head and heart bravely held hightonight’ll be
another helpless night
so she warned mea lamppost night of
scattering butterflies
and skittering fireflies
glowing in warm puffs and lost hugswaiting for the muggy moonlit hours to crawl
–when will she call?–
she’ll still be
waiting and cradling her fragile composure
tenderlyshakily
futilely
