Trin Chardin > Losing You

Losing You

Trinity knocked softly at the door of Neo's room. Not hearing an answer from within, she sighed and entered anyway. She shut the door close behind her and went to sit next to him on the narrow cot. He refused to acknowledge her presence and continued to stare at the blank wall before him.

"Neo..."

She gently touched his shoulder and moved closer to him. When he did not respond, she reached out to touch his face and made him look at her.

"It wasn't your fault."

She bit her lip as she saw his dark eyes bright with unshed tears. When he hesitantly touched her bandaged forehead, she covered his hand with her own before he could pull away. She brought it to her lips and kissed it lightly. He quickly jerked it away as if he'd been burned and turned to face the dark corner of his room. She took a deep breath, knowing she'd have to be patient or he'd withdraw deeper within himself. Ignoring how his body tensed at her touch, she wrapped her arms around his neck and rested her head on his shoulder.

"I should have been there for you."

Her eyes moistened at the evident pain in his voice and she pulled him even closer to her.

"You can't always be there for me."

"Why not? I'm the One, aren't I?"

She winced slightly at the bitterness that had crept into his voice. Ever since an Agent had almost killed her in the Matrix, he'd shut out everyone, including her. Morpheus was afraid that if this continued Neo might try to hurt himself. She wasn't about to let that happen. Not when she'd just found the man she was destined to love.

"That doesn't mean that you're God. You're not invincible."

"Why is it that I can save humanity but can't even save you? If Morpheus hadn't..."

"But, he did. And I'm here. A little worse from wear, but fine."

"But...what if I lost you?"

His soft-spoken words were filled with such fear that it scared her. But, it also made her love him more. She'd never known he cared that much. It was a well-known and accepted fact that she loved him, but he never actually told her that he felt the same. Finally, she found her voice and whispered soflty in his ear.

"Forget the what ifs. You're not going to lose me."

He turned to face her, surprised at the complete confidence he heard in her voice.

"Why not?"

"Because if you lose me, then I'd have lost you too. I won't let that happen."

Her lips curved up in a small smile, but her eyes were serious. The look on his face softened and he gently caressed her pale cheek.

"I love you."

A crimson blush stained her cheeks as he brought her face close for a soft, sweet kiss. No more words were spoken, but none were needed.
