NOS CREW HISTORY
Mini-Short Story

Private Conversation - Jayman & Crystal
Some hours after FALL's body is laid to rest in the Zion Gardens, Captain JAYMAN of the Nosferatu
meets with his closest friend, CRYSTAL, in her living quarters.
CRYSTAL's roommate, CARRIE, is out.
CRYSTAL'S QTRS. / JAYMAN:
Entering CRYSTAL's quarters, JAYMAN says, "Thanks... How're you doing? You okay?"
CRYSTAL'S QTRS. / CRYSTAL:
CRYSTAL sighs with sadness in her eyes. "I'll manage..."
JAYMAN:
"I've been thinking..." JAYMAN sits at the kitchen table. "Thought about some things... and I have a
couple things to ask you."
CRYSTAL:
CRYSTAL leans on the nearby counter, staring at the table, and replies quietly, "Go ahead."
JAYMAN:
JAYMAN looks down at the table. "There's no other way to say it but just to say it..." He looks up at her.
"Would you be willing to try again... take me back?"
CRYSTAL:
Freezing for a moment, CRYSTAL stares shocked and surprised at him. "What did you say?"
JAYMAN:
His voice showing genuine seriousness, JAYMAN adds, "I didn't know it then, but now I know I made a mistake...
Would you take me back?"
CRYSTAL:
Still shocked, CRYSTAL still can't believe her ears. "Hell, Jay... You should know the answer..."
As her green eyes glimmer in desperation, she bites her lower lip.
JAYMAN:
His dark eyes widening, JAYMAN softly replies, "Really? But..." He suddenly thinks of the crew.
CRYSTAL:
"Yeah... but I don't know if..." CRYSTAL sighs and bows her head, avoiding his look. "Remember the morning
after my seventh pod-birthday? You said what we did wasn't right... That was the second time you pushed me away..."
She pauses briefly, then adds, "What has changed since then?"
JAYMAN:
"But it was still an incredible night..." JAYMAN looks back down. Now it's his turn to pause. "Well, I think
I finally realized that I was afraid of life... I felt guilty for living while others died..." He looks up at her once more. "It was time
for me to let go... time for me to live life again... with you..."
CRYSTAL:
CRYSTAL raises her gaze to him, as her heart starts to beat faster. "Are you sure?"
JAYMAN:
JAYMAN meets her gaze. "I'm sure.... But as captain, with a new crew... we should take things slow."
CRYSTAL:
CRYSTAL sighs in slight relief. "I guess you're right... If we can't make it work this time..." She looks away.
"I don't want to relive those days again..."
JAYMAN:
"Neither do I," JAYMAN smiles, gets up, and walks over to her. "But it doesn't mean I can't give you a kiss, does it?...
To start again... begin a new journey..."
CRYSTAL:
CRYSTAL watches him approach her.
I must be dreaming all this...
She swallows, her eyes sparkling with joy, and returns his smile.
"Yeah..." she whispers, searching his eyes.
JAYMAN:
JAYMAN looks into her green eyes, and holding her waist, gently kisses her... and before he knows it, he begins
to passionately kiss her...
CRYSTAL:
Welcoming the kiss, CRYSTAL feels her heart throbbing.
God, I've missed the taste of your lips...
She wraps her arms around his neck.
JAYMAN:
Suddenly, JAYMAN realizes what's happening, and pulls away with a smiling sigh and chuckle.
"Ummm... Take it slow, remember?"
CRYSTAL:
"I know," CRYSTAL nods with her own sigh and smile. "I just never imagined we would ever
have a chance to get together again... I didn't think you cared about me in this way anymore..."
She rests her hands on his shoulders.
JAYMAN:
Still holding her, JAYMAN lets rests her arms, and softly answers. "I'm sorry... but I've always thought of you...
always wondering in the back of my mind.... Maybe we won't have to wonder anymore..."
CRYSTAL:
"Oh Jay..." CRYSTAL smiles, touched, a teardrop forming in the corner of her eye, a tear of relief and
happiness. "I've tried to forget you, but couldn't... but I accepted your decision and wanted to let you move on...
even if I've suffered a lot... and lately..."
JAYMAN:
"I'm so sorry," JAYMAN kisses her head. "I never meant to hurt you..."
CRYSTAL:
"I know," CRYSTAL says, a tear rolling down her cheek. She smiles.
JAYMAN:
Then JAYMAN pulls away gently and looks into her eyes. "... Just one more thing..."
CRYSTAL:
"Yeah?" CRYSTAL asks, her look becoming serious.
JAYMAN:
JAYMAN searches her eyes. "With new people, a new crew, I still need a first officer....
Would you be able to handle a promotion, commander?"
CRYSTAL:
CRYSTAL gasps, her serious expression breaking into a eye-widening smile of grateful surprise.
"If the captain thinks I'm objective enough for that..."
JAYMAN:
JAYMAN returns her smile. "I'll need you to be clear-headed, and not only mindful of your captain, but
mindful of your crew, as I will be... Can you handle that?"
CRYSTAL:
"Only if you trust me... I've had the feeling recently that you haven't any trust in me... You wanted me to train
Andy for first contact... I felt like you wanted to replace me... remove me from the ship..."
JAYMAN:
At first surprised, JAYMAN then softens into his warm smile. "I've always trusted you... Don't ever forget that...
But Andy was the one i didn't trust, didn't trust her silence... I wanted you to train Andy only as a way to get her to talk...
and she did... Understand?"
CRYSTAL:
CRYSTAL sighs, both ashamed yet relieved. "Oh, sorry for my silly thoughts... but I thought..." She raises an eyebrow.
"She did? Did she answer your unasked questions?"
JAYMAN:
JAYMAN stares into space. "Let's just say many of my questions were answered that day... Maybe I'll explain it
to you when I can explain it to myself..." He pauses then adds, "So, commander... Do you accept?
CRYSTAL:
With her reassuring smile, CRYSTAL nods, "Yes... I do."
JAYMAN:
"Then," JAYMAN grins broadly, "I guess it's time for me to leave... have to meet with our new operator..."
And reluctantly, he lets go of her.
CRYSTAL:
"Yeah," CRYSTAL keeps her smile, "Go..."
JAYMAN:
JAYMAN heads toward the door. "I'll let you know when we launch..."
CRYSTAL:
"And Jay?"
JAYMAN:
JAYMAN looks back. "Yeah?"
CRYSTAL:
With a fragile smile, CRYSTAL answers softly, "It's good to have you back... I've missed you..."
JAYMAN:
"Me too," JAYMAN replies warmly and readjusts his old black cap. "I'll... see you later..."
And he adds, "...commander."
CRYSTAL:
Her smile broadens. "See ya... captain."
JAYMAN:
He heads away, swings open and shuts the door behind him with a solid clank.
CRYSTAL:
CRYSTAL sighs with a slight but hopeful smile, and touches the faint-blue crystal of her necklace.
Yeah, a new journey... hopefully a happier one...
