THE NEWCOMER

"What?" Cyberreyn wonders to herself, rubbing her bloodshot blue-grey eyes. "Hmmm, must be seeing things."
She returns her tired attention to the pile of processed protein poop -- that is, soup. Leaving the tin can on the table, she holds her nose in her right hand, and spoons up a glob of soup in her left. Hesitantly, she forces the glob into her mouth. And quickly, she slurps it down her throat to avoid any possibility of tasting it. Slowly, she forces another glob--
"Tastes great, less filling!"
Startled, the newcomer gags on the goop, sputtering a spray across the table, almost choking. "What the f*ck?" she double-coughs.
Sky, one of the commanding officers, begins to laugh her high-pitched laugh. "Sorry about that, Cy." With a raised blond eyebrow over her sparkling emerald eye, she gestures to Cyberreyn's ridiculously stained rags, spots of goop dribbling down her chin.
Looking down at herself, and back at Sky, her next few double-coughs turn into full laughter. And in those few moments of shared laughter, a womanly bond seems to form.
"Hey, you can actually smile!" Sky smiles. "And now that you've made me hungry... would you be interested in one of Flicker's famous menus?"
Her attention flipping from tired to tireless, Cy smiles widely, "Sure!"
"Well, let's go!"
As they leave the mess hall, Cyberreyn vaguely seems to notice another odd shadow appear and disappear along the wall of pipes. But with "real but virtual" food on her mind, she dismisses it like a crumpled piece of newspaper floating in the wind.
"Hmmm," the newcomer wonders silently, "what should I have?"
